Spending a lot of time road tripping, camping, hiking, and exploring you discover gaps in your equipment. Or pieces of equipment you want to use that don't exist. Being designers our inclination is to fix problems. One such problem we've been thinking about was taking the experience of cooking over a campfire and making it portable. How can you take a small campfire with you when picnicking. We'd heard of cooking over charcoal starters before to quickly sear steaks and thought we could combine that with a fire-pit. The result is a compact tall fire-pit with a built in grilling grate. Build a fire in the bottom and once its raging pop on the grate and quickly cook anything you want. Remove the grate between rounds to feed the fire. An open bottom allows ample air to be pulled in to keep the fire roaring.
Clara mocked up the rough design and using her dad's shop we welded together the first version of the Field Grill. Being our first time welding and plasma cutting we're really pleased with the outcome.
Once the weather is nicer we'll be field testing the grill to find improvements for the second version.
