Maine in the winter is gorgeous. We lucked out that a recent storm had coated all the trees with fresh snow. The day after Thanksgiving four of us and Kleine headed to Morse Mountain for a day hike and lunch on the beach. Morse Mountain is only a half hour drive from Bath Maine, and a very relaxed hike. A forth of the way in you gradually approach the summit. Reaching the top you see a vast white landscape spill out in front of you, a sweeping view of snow capped trees and iced over rivers.
A little further down the trail the trees start to thin out and the wind picks up. A small yellow sign about local birds informs you’ve reached the beach. We pull out the thanksgiving left over sandwiches we’d packed and crack open some beers. The beach is almost completely white from the snow, the first time I’ve ever walked on a snow beach. The complex clouds above cut up the sunset in dramatic ways creating an impressive scene for lunch.
It slowly shifts to dusk as we leave the beach and head back through the woods to the car.
